Canary-Three™. This unique chemical sensor system intelligently collects a sample from ambient air. If the ambient concentration is high, Canary-Three™ autonomously determines a short sample collection time. For low concentrations, it will autonomously collect a larger sample volume. As with all Defiant products, Canary-Three™ features selective chemical collection so that interfering chemicals are ignored and micro GC separations to uniquely identify target chemicals. All of these features combine for a chemical sensor system that can provide high confidence analysis of chemical warfare agents in a matter of 2 minutes. Unlike other commercial systems, Canary-Three™ uses ambient air as the carrier gas so there is no need to carry or refill gas bottles. The system is handheld or can be emplaced in a sensor network for continuous protection. Every 2 minutes, this system will specifically identify sarin, soman, sulfur mustard, VX and their relative concentrations.

Defiant's modular manifold accepts the key system components (micro pre-concentrator, micro GC column and micro SAW array detector). The manifold provides fluidic and electrical connections for each component. The components outlined in green provide our intelligent sample collection. The components outlined in blue perform our GC analysis. The entire card is approximately the footprint of a standard business card.

The smart sample collector prescreens ambient air and sets the collection time for the GC-SAW system. The high concentration is detected much faster. The top trace shows how the system responds to a concentration of 180 ppbv. The lower trace shows the system automatically reducing the sample collection time when the concentration is 10 times higher.
