Chem-SimpleTM. This sensor system is capable of reporting a complete
high confidence analysis of chemical warfare agents in a matter of 2 minutes. Unlike other commercial systems, Chem-SimpleTM uses ambient air as
the carrier gas. Therefore there is no need to carry gas bottles or refill them. As can be seen, this system is handheld or it can be emplaced
in a sensor network for continuous protection. Every 2 minutes, this system will specifically identify sarin, soman, sulfur mustard, etc and
their relative concentrations.

Defiant's modular manifold accepts the actual key components to the system like the micro
preconcentrator, micro GC column and micro SAW array detector. The manifold provides fluidic and electrical connections for each component. |

Defiant’s Chem-Simple system completes an analyis in 139 seconds. With the on board battery,
Chem-Simple can operate continuously for 4 hours. Its dimensions are 7-1/2”L x 5-1/16”W x 2-1/8”D. In hand held applications, Chem-Simple
will report chemical identification and concentration to a 4 line display. However, for remote applications (e.g. facility monitor,
UAV/UGV payload) Chem-Simple can report chromatographic data via serial port. Alternatively, it can report a short message containing
chemical name and concentration via a serial port. Chem-Simple uses ambient air; no specialty gases are needed for operation.

What can chemical selectivity do for you? The system was introduced to a mixture of
three chemicals. Two chemicals were target chemicals DMMP and Methyl Salicylate (MES). The third was an industial solvent, methylene chloride
at a concentration a few orders of magnitude higher than DMMP and MES. Chem Simple™ shows little or no response for very high concentrations of
an interfering chemical like methylene chloride. However, the very small amounts of chemical surrogates for sarin gas (DMMP) and mustard gas
(MES) produce a very large response. Both are detected in the same analysis but reach the detector at different times thanks to an integrated
micro gas chromatography.
