Can I use the FROG-4000 or TOCAM to analyze for a certain compound?
The Frog-4000 and the TOCAM are capable of detecting many different volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The majority of the FROG-4000 and TOCAM applications are for BTEX (Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylenes), Chlorinated Alkenes (cis-1,2-Dichloroethene, trans-1,2-Dichloroethene, Trichloroethene, and Tetrachloroethene), and Naphthalene. However the FROG-4000 or the TOCAM can be used for other applications. What is the difference between the FROG-4000 and the TOCAM?
The main difference is that the FROG-4000 may be used for soil, water or air sampling. The TOCAM may only be used for air sampling, and is primarily for distributed, fixed, or perimeter monitoring. The TOCAM also has an additional PID to simultaneously detect for total VOCs. System integrators will find the TOCAM to be a very compact low power solution for distributed sensing applications.

What is the difference between the Portable Gas Diluter and the Inline Diluter?
The Portable Gas Diluter is used to calibrate the FROG-4000 or TOCAM. The portable gas diluter enables the user to mix various known concentrations from a single calibration gas cylinder. The Inline Diluter is used for diluting high concentration samples for the FROG-4000 or TOCAM.

My flashlight/timer/security light/power strip isn't working, can you help me fix it?
There is a different company by the name of Defiant. We produce gas chromatography instruments and accessories, not flashlights. Please contact the company you purchased your flashlight/timer/security light/power strip from.


Can I download the software for the FROG-4000 or TOCAM from your website?
Currently software is not available on our website. Please email, or call 505-999-5880 to obtain software.

What concentration unit does the software report the results in?
The software reports the concentration in the same units that the instrument was calibrated in. If Defiant calibrated the instrument then the concentration unit is parts per billion (ppb) for water and parts per billion by volume (ppbv) for air.


Is calibration for the FROG-4000 or TOCAM required?
Yes, calibration is necessary for proper use of the FROG-4000 or TOCAM.

Can I calibrate the FROG-4000 or TOCAM myself?
Yes, we offer calibration kits for FROG-4000 water calibrations. For FROG or TOCAM air calibrations a gas dilution system is required, our Portable Gas Diluter may be used for these calibrations. Defiant Technologies offers calibration services and training courses that cover how to calibrate these instruments.

How long does a calibration last?
A calibration for the FROG-4000 lasts 3 weeks. After 3 weeks the percent recoveries may be less than 90% or greater than 110%.


I was loading a sample on the FROG-4000 and 2 white plastic rings fell off the FROG, what are these?
These rings are Teflon ferrules that allow the sparge bottle or air sampler to seal onto the front of the FROG-4000. It is important that they are installed correctly. Watch a video showing how to re-install them.

When do I need to change the scrubber material on the FROG-4000?
The FROG-4000 uses air as the carrier gas, and uses scrubber material (activated carbon and molecular sieve) to clean the air. The frequency at which these need to be replaced varies with how often the Frog is used and the cleanliness of the environment it is used in. For daily FROG use we recommend replacing the scrubber material every month, for weekly (or infrequent) FROG use, we recommend replacing the scrubber material every 3 months. I noticed that there are two USB Cables in the FROG-4000's case, what is the difference?
The difference between the USB cables are the non-USB ends. One of the cables has an auxiliary cable end, this cable is the serial data cable, it is used for connecting the FROG-4000 to the Ellvin GC software to run the FROG live with the software. The other cable has a micro USB connector on one end, this cable is used for extracting data files from the Frog's memory. What sort of maintenance does the FROG-4000 require?
Routine Maintenance on the FROG 4000 includes exchanging the scrubber material. Calibration is also required every 3 weeks for proper analysis with the Frog. Defiant also offers an annual service contract available for purchase.

How do I adjust retention times? Why do I need to do this?
When the FROG-4000 is calibrated at a different location than the one it is being used at adjusting retention times is necessary, due to differences in barometric pressure and/or altitude. You can adjust retention times by running the retention time check sample and following the instruction sheet provided with your calibrated Frog. It is important that the retention times are adjusted properly prior to sampling.

How long can I run the FROG-4000 on it's battery?
With a fully charged battery the FROG-4000 will run continuously for about 6 hours.
